On March 21, 2024, the Executive Branch presented a roadmap to accelerate the semiconductor industry in Costa Rica. The purpose of the plan is to create a strategy for the consolidation of Costa Rica at the regional level as a center for this industry. With the presentation of the program, an Executive Decree declaring this area of public interest was also signed.

Semiconductors are components found in electronic devices of all types of industries, including automotive, medical devices, manufacturing, and information technology. In Costa Rica, the primary users of semiconductors, manufacturers established under the free trade zone regime, have shown the most growth.

The government’s plan focuses on four main axes: i) training and developing specialized professionals for this industry; ii) modernizing and seeking new incentives for companies that set up in this sector; iii) attracting new foreign investment to the country; and iv) improving regulation to boost the country’s competitiveness at the regional level and thereby attract new companies in this sector.
