On Saturday, August 15, 2020, Costa Rica celebrates Mother’s Day which was established as a holiday of mandatory payment according to article 148 of the Labor Code.
This year, under Law No. 9875, Transfer holidays to Mondays, to promote internal visits and tourism during the years 2020 to 2024, the enjoyment of Mother’s Day from a labor perspective will take place on Monday, August 17.
The company with a weekly payment mode that pays only for days worked is obligated to pay the holiday as a single day of work, even if an employee does not work. When the company has a biweekly or monthly payment mode, the same rule applies. This means that the employer must pay the date as a single day even if the employee does not work (included in the monthly salary).
If the company requires and requests an employee to work on August 17, 2020, it must pay twice the daily wages or salary (double-time).
