The Ministry of Energy and Mines of Guatemala (MEM) issued Agreement No. 359-2025/SG, which establishes the procedure for implementing the blended fuel alcohol program. This measure is part of the policy that will enable the State of Guatemala to progressively implement the commercial use of biofuel.
Under this Agreement, the percentages are set as follows (as established in the regulation):
- Total Blend Percentage: A definitive and mandatory blend of fuel alcohol with gasoline at 10%, effective in 2026.
- Minimum Percentage of Advanced Ethanol and Fuel Alcohol: The minimum blend proportion is 60% Advanced Ethanol and 40% Fuel Alcohol.
- Total Volume of Fuel Alcohol Contracts: Since no supply contracts were signed regarding volumes of Fuel Alcohol and Advanced Ethanol, the total volume is determined to be zero (0) gallons, resulting in a 100% supply deficit.
- Projected Supply Deficit Volume: Based on Resolution DGE-956-2025, the projected supply deficit is 50,054,362 gallons, distributed as 60% Advanced Ethanol and 40% Fuel Alcohol.
The implementation of fuel alcohol in fossil fuels aims, among other objectives, to:
- Reduce pollutant emissions through the use of clean biofuels.
- Promote agro-industrial development, particularly in sectors such as sugarcane production.
- Reduce dependence on petroleum as an energy source.
