Guatemala is preparing to launch an international public tender for the expansion of a key highway segment: the El Rancho–Teculután section of the CA-9 Corridor, with an investment value of US$175 million. This initiative presents a significant opportunity for construction, supervision, and infrastructure investment firms worldwide.
The project consists of expanding 35 kilometers of the existing highway to four lanes, including the construction of a bypass toward Teculután, Zacapa. The corridor is strategically important, as it connects the country to its Atlantic ports, enhancing logistics, reducing travel times, and improving regional economic competitiveness.
The tender process will begin with a prequalification phase, with the first virtual information session scheduled for May 14, 2025. This stage aims to identify and evaluate companies interested in participating, based on their technical, legal, and financial capabilities. Full bidding documents will be published thereafter.
The project is backed by a co-financed loan from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), contributing US$75 million and US$100 million, respectively. The financing terms include highly competitive conditions: a 1% interest rate, execution periods of five years (IDB) and six years (AECID), and an estimated internal economic rate of return of 26.3%.
