On Monday, May 1, the countries of Central America celebrate International Workers Day (Labor Day), regulated in the region as follows:
Guatemala: The holiday is a mandatory payment day. An employer must pay an employee who works on May 1 time and a half (1.5 times the ordinary salary) as compensation for the day.
Honduras: Under article 339 of the Labor Code, an employer must pay twice the daily salary to an employee who works on May 1.
El Salvador: Under articles 190 and 192 of the Labor Code, an employer must pay twice the daily salary to an employee who works on May 1.
Nicaragua: Under article 66 of the Labor Code, an employer must pay twice the daily salary to an employee who works on May 1.
Costa Rica: Under article 143 of the Labor Code, an employer must pay twice the daily salary to an employee who works on May 1.
Regionally, May 1 is a mandatory payment holiday. An employer must pay the regular daily salary to an employee who does not work on May 1, as with weekly, biweekly, or monthly salary payment schedules.
