The National Animal Health Service (SENASA) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of Costa Rica, through Resolution No. SENASADVESADCAR00092026, issued on June 22, 2026, has established new preventive sanitary measures that impact the trade of poultry products.
The National Agri-Food Health and Safety Service (SENASA) of Honduras officially notified the confirmation of a case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in domestic poultry, detected in the municipality of San Pedro Zacapa, Department of Santa Bárbara.
Likewise, the event was reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OMSA), with onset on June 15 and confirmation on June 18, 2026.
With the objective of protecting the country’s sanitary status, SENASA has resolved:
- To temporarily suspend the importation of poultry commodities considered at risk, in accordance with Chapter 10.4 of the OMSA Terrestrial Animal Health Code, originating from Honduras.
- This restriction applies to commodities produced or obtained as of May 18, 2026, considering a period of 28 days prior to the onset of the sanitary event.
The suspension includes poultry products and by-products with commercial access that may pose a risk of introducing the virus into the national territory.
This provision takes effect immediately upon its issuance and is mandatory at all points of entry into the country.
