Costa Rica: Extension of Validity of Sanitary Registrations for Medicines (Resolution DM-1725-2026)

The Ministry of Health of Costa Rica issued Resolution DM-1725-2026, establishing an exceptional one-year extension of the validity of certain sanitary registrations for medicines that are required to demonstrate therapeutic equivalence.

This measure aims to ensure the continuity in the supply of essential medicines, preventing interruptions in their commercialization while the Ministry completes the technical evaluation of renewal applications submitted in a timely manner.

Scope of the Extension

  • Applies to medicines whose sanitary registrations expire between November 2025 and December 2026.
  • The validity of these registrations is automatically extended for an additional one (1) year.
  • The measure benefits products whose renewal applications were filed within the regulatory deadline.

This is a temporary process and does not constitute final approval of the renewal applications. Registration holders remain obligated to comply with all technical and regulatory requirements established under applicable regulations.

The commercialization of products covered by this resolution may continue without interruption during the extension period.

Effective date: April 1, 2026.
